Before the Leaves are Gone
A gentle invitation to notice what is here

There is still time.
Before the leaves are gone, the branches are bare and autumn gives way to the quieter days ahead, there is still time to notice what is here.
A leaf turning gold at its edges. The sound of something dry beneath your feet. A last flower holding on in the garden. The particular way October light falls across the afternoon.
This month’s Creative Practice isn’t something to finish or check off a list. You don’t need a sketchbook or art supplies. You don’t even need to make anything.
Take a walk that doesn’t count as exercise, or simply step outside for a few minutes. Look around and notice one small thing that tells you exactly where you are in the season. You don’t need to collect it, photograph it, draw it, or turn it into anything.
Just notice.

There is something about the trees at this time of year that I find reassuring. They remind us that it is okay to let go. They release what they have carried, and then comes a season of rest.
Perhaps we need that reminder, too.
Letting go is not the end of the story. There is a season for releasing what has run its course, and a season of rest that follows. We don’t have to rush toward either one. There is still time to notice what is here.
Be there for what is here.
This Month’s Companion Leaf
October's Companion Leaf carries a small reminder inspired by the season:
You don’t have to hold onto something to cherish it.

Print a copy to tuck into a book or journal, place somewhere you’ll happen upon it, or simply keep the words with you as autumn unfolds.
