Making Room

An invitation for making room for beauty in everyday life

Continuing the conversation from this month's Artful Season letter

Pink Depression glass ice bucket repurposed as a holder for artist’s paintbrushes, reflecting the beauty of giving treasured objects new purpose.

As we've unpacked our home over the past several months, I've found myself asking the same quiet question again and again:

Does this belong in the life we're creating?

At first, I thought I was simply deciding where things should go. But somewhere between unpacking boxes and finding new homes for old treasures, I realized I was making a much deeper choice.

I was choosing what would become part of our everyday life in this new season.

Perhaps making room isn't just about clearing a shelf or organizing a cupboard. Perhaps it's about making space for the things that remind us who we are and how we want to live.

Use Something Beautiful

Many of us have at least one thing we've been saving for "someday."

The good dishes. The handmade pottery. A favorite quilt. A beautiful notebook.

We carefully tuck them away, waiting for the perfect occasion.

But what if today is special enough?

This summer, a pink Depression glass ice bucket that had been tucked away for years found a new purpose. It now holds my paintbrushes where I see it every day. Each time I reach for a brush, I'm reminded of the dear friend who gave it to us as a wedding gift. I've come to believe that beautiful things aren't diminished by being used.

Instead, they gather something new: the memories and stories of our everyday lives.

Let Beauty Become Useful

Beauty doesn't have to wait for a holiday or a celebration. Some of life's sweetest moments happen on an ordinary Tuesday morning, when we choose to surround ourselves with the things we love.

Using the good china, writing in the beautiful notebook, or finding a new purpose for something we've treasured allows beauty to become part of the ordinary rhythm of our days.

Let me offer you this simple thought: We are special enough for the good dishes.

Leave a Little Room

Making room isn't only about what we choose to keep.

It's also about leaving a little space. A clear corner of a table, an open shelf, a quiet afternoon, a few moments to notice what often goes unseen.

Empty space allows the beautiful things we choose to keep to be appreciated.

It also leaves room for something new to arrive.

This Month's Creative Practice

Choose one beautiful object you've been saving for "someday." Give it a place in your everyday life. Use it. Enjoy it. Or discover an entirely new purpose for something you've treasured for years.

Then spend a few quiet moments noticing how it changes not only your space, but the way you feel in it.

Pause and Reflect

What have I been saving for someday?

Companion Leaf

I've created a printable Companion Leaf to accompany this month's practice. Print it, spend a few quiet moments with it, and perhaps begin a collection of your own.

Continue the Season

If this is your first visit, welcome. I'm so glad you found your way here.

The Artful Season arrives as a monthly letter filled with seasonal reflections, stories from my studio, creative inspiration, and thoughts on living with greater intention and beauty.

Each month's conversation continues here with a Creative Practice and a Companion Leaf to print, reflect upon, and keep.

I'd love to continue the conversation with you.

With heart,

Karen
